Within the frames of the Day of Ethnic Diversity, International dance mob «They don't care about us» and briefing of national and international organizations representatives were held on Independence Square in Kyiv on 21 March 2010. UNV Coordinator in Ukraine Giovanni Mozzarelli took part at the briefing, where he outlined the UN and UNV activities aimed to put an end to all kinds of discrimination in Ukraine and globally.
Racism and xenophobia are often generated by the ignorance of other’s cultures, United Nations Volunteers programme contributes to the fight them by sending every year more than 7500 volunteers from 160 Countries to assist population in their local development. UNV volunteers do not bring only their professional skills to people in need, but with their actions they show the best of their culture and traditions. At the same time they learn the local one. UNV volunteers work to create bridges among communities, - stated Giovanni Mozzarelli.
In Ukraine UNV is a proud member of the Diversity Initiative Network a platform chaired by the International Organization for Migration and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR. DIN is a network to facilitate information exchange and identify common issues. It also serves as a mechanism for coordination and advocacy concerning racism and intolerance in Ukraine. Overall it seeks to raise awareness and promote diversity among the general population, and specifically seeks to support the Ukrainian government and populations in need of assistance after suffering from hate crimes, - added UNV Coordinator in Ukraine Giovanni Mozzarelli.

In the context of the International Year of Rapprochement of Cultures, on 20 January UN Office in Ukraine launched the Nationwide Children Drawing Contest “Children of the world, join your hands!” to highlight the importance and necessity of educating children in the spirit of tolerance to all cultures and nationalities.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination (resolution 2142 (XXI)). Read more >>>

International Year of Rapprochement of Cultures
The year 2010 will be celebrated as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. The goal of the International Year consists in making the rapprochement of cultures the hallmark of all policy-making at local, national, regional and international levels, involving the greatest number of relevant stakeholders.
