The International Day of Peace celebration in Ukraine

All-Ukrainian “Peace Dove” Campaign

21 September 2013 (Celebration will take place on 20 September)

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 36/67 to declare this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Ukraine has supported the decision of the UN General Assembly by signing a Presidential Decree from 05.02.2002 № 100/2002 declaring 21 September as National Day of Peace in Ukraine.

Each year various events and campaigns are organized around the word to observe the day and draw attention to the diverse work in support of peace, as well as to motivate individuals, groups and societies around the globe to understand the problems hindering the way to global peace and exchanging information and experience for its achievement. Such events gather thousands of participants, inspiring each other by their diversity and scale. On this very day several concerts, forums, campaigns and contests are widely organized and taken part in all corners of the world.

The International Day of Peace also provides adults with a unique opportunity to educate the young generation about the importance of peace and principles of humanity, freedom, kindness and respect for nations. Several worldwide celebrities have also joined the celebration, among them UN Messengers of Peace George Clooney, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Stevie Wonder and others.

United Nations in Ukraine is organizing All-Ukrainian “Peace Dove” campaign to celebrate the International Day of Peace in Ukraine and invites all pupils and teachers in the Ukrainian schools to participate in it.

School smay take part in the campaign by creating a human formation of “Peace Dove” with their pupils and sending photos of their ‘Peace Doves” back to the United Nations in Ukraine.

The photos of best Peace Dovehuman formations will be published on the UN in Ukraine official website and the top three schools will receive 50 badges with UN logo for distribution among their pupils.

As the theme of the International Day of Peace in 2013 is “Education for Peace”, United Nations in Ukraine is strongly encouraging all schools in Ukraine to observe the theme of peace in their educational activities by conducting lectures, showing movies and/or carrying out other relevant activities dedicated to the promotion of peace.
