8 April 2014 - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, Rita Izsák, met with the Heads of UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes – members of the UN Country Team in Ukraine in the frame of her visit to Ukraine.  

8 April 2014 - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, Rita Izsák, met with the Heads of UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes – members of the UN Country Team in Ukraine in the frame of her visit to Ukraine.

The UN Country Team shared their view with the Special Rapporteur related to the situation and challenges faced by the minority groups in Ukraine, existing institutional governance and legal framework, access to education and services, their engagement into and participation in the economic, political and social life.

The mission of the Special Rapporteur also includes travels to the West, East and South oblasts and cities of Ukraine and meetings with various stakeholders and partners. Upon the completion of the mission to Ukraine, a special report will be submitted to the Human Rights Council and to the General Assembly.

The Mandate of the Special Rapporteur among other includes promotion of implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities; assessment of ways and means of overcoming existing obstacles to the full and effective realization of the rights of persons belonging to minorities; identification of the best practices and possibilities for technical cooperation at the request of Governments with the Office of the High Commissioner.
