turn_off_the_light.jpg2 November, 2009. Kyiv, Ukraine. – On 30 October theUnited Nations Office and the Global Compact Network in Ukraine began the second wave of social environmental campaign "Seal the Deal", which takes place in the framework of the national initiative GO GREEN! (“Прямуй на зелене!”).

The campaign has to aims: on the one hand, to increase awareness of the Ukrainian population about the necessity to sign a climate agreement by world leaders in Copenhagen in December 2009, on the other, with own ecological activities to appeal to every citizen to contribute to the improvement of the environment, show own commitment to its protection.

“To turn off unnecessary lights, twirl a faucet, clean up rubbish, set up the car in such a way to reduce carbon emissions, to sign on-line Petition “Seal the Deal!”… The vast majority of the inhabitants of Ukraine can withstand climate change, which consequences might leave millions of people without homes by the end of the century, by their action, - said UN System Coordinator in Ukraine Olivier Adam. – Even now, 9 out of 10 natural disasters in the world are caused by climate change. Ukraine is not an exception - climate change causes significant damage: floods, fires, underflooding, salinization, and desertification in the country. The situation demands everybody’s active and responsible public position which would create an opportunity to influence the political will of world leaders, who are responsible for the adoption and ratification of common protection policy of the Earth natural resources”.

World leaders will gather at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen on 7-18 December 2009, to reach a new agreement, which will replace Kyoto Protocol on its expiration in 2012. The new agreement should provide comprehensive response to one of the most pressing challenges of today - how to protect the planet and build a green economy to ensure long-term prosperity of present and future of mankind.

Main idea of the information campaign “Seal the Deal!”, under which launched a social advertising campaign in Ukraine, is to emphasize that the reaching the deal on Post-Kyoto Protocol by the time the meeting ends on December 18 will depend not only on political negotiations but also on public pressure from around the globe. Public support must be galvanized. To do this, the United Nations has launched “Seal the Deal”, a campaign that encourages users to sign an online, global petition which will be presented to world leaders.

The Petition, available for signing at: http://www.sealthedeal2009.org , serves as a vivid reminder to world leaders that the adoption of efficient, effective agreement will protect our planet, building a sustainable economic development and will guarantee prosperity for all people and nations.

Due to the national campaign, which will cover about 500 boards and city lights of BigBoard Company in 6 cities of Ukraine - Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Kharkiv, Simferopol, Lviv – Ukrainians will learn how they can join the global movement to save the planet.

Tabasco Agency
developed the campaign’s creative idea. It includes 4 advertisement, urging viewers to environmentally responsible action to address the most urgent environmental problems in Ukraine: energy efficiency, water conservation, clean air, recycling waste.

Both companies BigBoard and Tabasco offered their services free for the project implementations.

“We believe that such urgent problem as our environment condition can not be pushed into the background, in spite of political or economic situation. In addition to air pollution and industrial contamination, we see a lot of garbage on the streets and careless of ordinary citizens towards environment, which is why our company decided to take deliberate and systematical approach to change ecological behavior of Ukrainians through channels of outdoor advertising, because it is one of the most effective channels of delivering information to the masses, covering most of the population,
- said Mr. Yuriy Charuha, Director General of BigBoard Company. - For 2009 we have placed over 4000 boards and city lights of social advertising in Ukraine. In case this campaign would be commercial, approximate cost of it would be estimated at 4 mln. UAH”.

Tabasco Agency developed the creative idea for the national social campaign “Seal the Deal!”. “We were looking for a way to say: by taking care of natural resources and environment, you support international agreements on environmental protection. Our solution is - every action of its kind - is your signature to improve the environment”, - commented Alexander Smirnov, creative director of Tabasco.
